Challenge

An independent community hospital serving a large, underinsured patient population faced workforce and financial pressures that made it difficult to recruit and retain experienced leaders. During a period of significant organizational change, turnover across multiple leadership positions further strained the organization. Vacancies spanned several critical departments, including cardiopulmonary services, radiology, emergency services, infection prevention and quality.

To maintain continuity, the hospital needed experienced professionals who could quickly step into critical roles, support frontline teams and keep departments moving forward while permanent recruitment efforts continued.

Solution

The hospital partnered with Aya to fill several interim leadership positions, including an interim cardiopulmonary services manager, radiology director, emergency department manager, infection prevention manager and quality director. The experienced leaders provided immediate support while permanent recruitment continued.

According to the hospital’s Chief Nursing Officer, Aya’s responsiveness and ability to quickly deliver qualified candidates helped the organization maintain momentum during a challenging period.

“Time is everything,” she said. “If I cannot get somebody for two months, then I’m struggling. I recently posted a position for a med-surg manager who left, and because of Aya, I already had a replacement starting a couple weeks later.”

Beyond speed, the organization valued the quality of the candidates Aya provided.

“The candidates that Aya presents are really above par,” she said. “I don’t have to spend a lot of time interviewing 20 people and deciding who I want to hire.”

One placement, however, stood out. Aya placed an interim leader to oversee cardiopulmonary services after the previous manager went on extended leave. Within weeks, the leader earned the trust of staff and leadership while identifying opportunities to strengthen operations and compliance.

Aya’s interim leaders helped the hospital maintain continuity during a period of significant change, giving leadership confidence that critical departments would remain in capable hands.

“There was a time I was literally surviving because of Aya,” the CNO said. “They brought us excellent leaders. They are ready to go on the first day, very seasoned and know how to manage staff and operations.”

The cardiopulmonary services leader quickly delivered measurable improvements, including:

  • Increased medication administration compliance from 10-15% to approximately 95%
  • Strengthened regulatory readiness through gap analysis and process improvements
  • Relaunched a key multidisciplinary clinical committee
  • Supported development of a new specialty service line

The leader’s performance earned the confidence of both staff and hospital leadership, ultimately leading the organization to convert the interim placement into a permanent hire.

“I highly recommend Aya,” the CNO said. “When I work with them, I can be peaceful and at ease that I’m going to get a strong candidate that I can trust to manage that department.”
