Hospital leaders praise Toccara for her outstanding care

A hospital’ CEO and emergency department director of nursing praised Toccara for the outstanding care she provided on two separate occasions.

For the first occasion, a patient’s husband and mother wrote a card that said, “Thank you for your four-plus hours of care, concern and great attitude during a very busy ER night. We really appreciate you. All the best wishes to you for a healthy wonderful 2023.”

For the second occasion, Toccara explained, “I was recognized for crushing the expected door-to-balloon time for a patient having an acute heart attack. Due to my keen assessment skills during triage, I immediately obtained an EKG in three minutes that revealed an active heart attack. The patient was rapidly placed in a core bed in the main ED where the ED and MD cardiologists could assess and promptly get the patient to the cath lab. Some people might wonder why this got so much praise when we do this every day, and it’s because the patient was not brought in by ambulance, so the staff didn’t have as much time to prepare for the incoming case. Additionally, this patient walked through the front door with her family and had atypical symptoms. I didn’t wait for her to finish the story. I asked the husband to relay further background so I could immediately obtain an EKG. And it’s a good thing I did! Lastly, because was no prep time, the team was not only able to conduct a very thorough and efficient STEMI Alert, we were able to crush the door-to-balloon time. Typically door-to-balloon time should be within 90 mins and we got it within 63 mins. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!

Congratulations, Toccara! Your team appreciates you, and so do we!

A coworker nominates Karly for a DAISY Award

A colleague nominated Karly for a DAISY Award for being an incredible healthcare hero for patients and an absolute rock for her colleagues.

The coworker wrote, “Karly was such a ray of sunshine on our unit. She was always the first one to dive into a situation and help whoever needed it and never shied away from an emergency. She is such an amazing nurse to her patients. One time she had a patient who wanted a specific snack after giving birth, and Karly went out of her way to bring her exactly what she wanted when she came back the next day. Another time, I walked into the operating room to help Karly with an emergency C-section, and with all of the chaos and adrenaline rushing around the room, Karly stayed at her patient’s side. The rest of us in the OR were prepping the patient for surgery, and Karly stood at the tearful patient’s head, stroking her hair, telling her we were going to take great care of her and her baby and we had everything handled. Karly was that patient’s rock at that moment as the rest of us were preparing for the surgery. She made the patient feel safe at a time when things were so far out of her control. I can only imagine how thankful that patient was to have Karly as her nurse. As a newer traveler, I will always do my best to be the ‘Karly’ at every hospital I travel to!”

Kelly, you truly exemplify what it means to provide quality care to your patients. Congratulations on the nomination!

Kali was always kind and cheerful and never showed any sign of impatience or weakness. She was upbeat and efficient. She came as quickly as possible to relieve him from the mess. He was depressed and humiliated by it, but she kept him from being gloomy or testy. He and I are so grateful for her skill and attitude.
