Healthcare Innovation: Executive Handbook-Ten Transformative Trends 2024
April Hansen, MSN, RN, group president of workforce solutions with Aya Healthcare, a healthcare talent software and staffing company, says she’s seen strides over the past months to stabilize the core staff workforce so there’s less reliance on external travel labor. Wages for nurses have increased significantly, she notes. Alternative scheduling is a tool to help solve labor shortages and address burnout. ‘Being able to work six-hour shifts would help so many clinicians who are feeling burned out…This is critical when we look at the state of the clinician workforce, where the average tenure of a bedside nurse is 2.78 years.’
Additionally, Hansen believes that ‘international recruitment of clinicians is a viable option.’ However, restrictive immigration policies can hinder this.
‘Hospitals, big and small, need help filling the talent pipeline. To get them interested early, they are going into elementary and middle schools and talking about having a career in healthcare—all facets of healthcare, including med techs, imaging, and other allied health professionals,’ Hansen says.”
